Welcome to a new feature here at Palm Boutique – our Fashion, Colour & Style Page, providing you with a quick guide to the trends of the season and a look forward to the next.
Glamour is back:
50s style feminine glamour really has influenced this and next season’s designs. Of course, each designer adds a unique twist or something new, but look carefully at the top fashion house creations and you will discover the everlasting influence of some of our most iconic movie stars. When looking forward in fashion, we inevitably look to history, the vintage years of the 20s and 30s and the glamour and style of the 50s and early 60s. How can we forget the eternally stylish character of Holly Golightly made famous by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's or the ever classic and timeless allure of Grace Kelly and so many more? We have so much to thank them for……….
Winter 2008/2009:
The Winter 2008/9 colour palette has something to suit everyone. From rich earthy hues of honey, bronze, chocolate, dusky taupe pinks and gunmetal to jewel tones of red, purple, pink and green. Jewels have real influence on colour: Fiery claret reds of ruby and garnet, inky sapphire blues, amethyst purple, blackberry and damson to shades of lilac, fusing into blue tones of aquamarine, kingfisher teal and even dark navy blue makes a comeback.
Fuchsia pink/red, fresh citrus greens, olive, and orange have all been seen at the top Fashion House’s Catwalk Shows & Collections, most notably Dior’s incredible Cruise Collection. All these are favourite colours at Palm Boutique and we are pleased to see these beautiful colours making a splash in the deepest depths of winter. These vibrant shades along with softer caramel taupe, cocoa pink and sugar pink, peach sorbet, pistachio and pale lavender cross over this season into next……….see Spring/Summer 2009 below.
This season’s Catwalks have been full of chic and sophisticated, architectural shapes softened with ruffles, satin bows and lace and trimmed with fur (we support faux fur only!) Prints are bold and colourful, floral, sometimes retro and animal prints are back – again think faux, chic and don’t overdo it – try an animal print bag, belt or scarf rather than smothering yourself in it.
Jewellery is bold and sometimes super-sized. Geometric metallics are seen alongside the flora and fauna and bright colours that we love so much! Think statement glamour and luxury. Pearls are a must have this season and don’t by too shy – pile them on. One strand is simply not enough!
Spring/Summer 2009:
Black and white is here again but with a twist! The fabulous Spring Summer 2009 catwalk shows at Chanel, displayed reworks of the classic black and white suit and dresses interwoven with metallic thread and hints of silver. Blouses and tops in sugar pink and peach sorbet complimented the black & white and also featured on their own in chiffons and shimmering fabrics. Pearlescent creamy whites, flowers, bows and more ruffles and soft sparkle all added a glamorous femininity that will be so pleasing to wear. Brooches & loose swung belts with long tendrils of pearls and beads and crystal embellishment were also a major feature.
The Spring Summer 2009 Collections at Dior and Roberto Cavalli continued the current season’s tones and added more beautiful colours for us to wear – pale lavender, aquamarine, citrus greens and lemon, pistachio, apricot and salmon pink. Printed chiffon in spots, retro designs and plain black were paired with fabulous jewellery, a plethora of pearls, bows, flora and fauna, plus bold shiny and colourful geometric designs – we loved it all!
Style Tips:
The dress has firmly re-established itself worldwide. It is simple all-in-one ready to go dressing! There are a variety of styles to choose from and before going out to buy a new one, take a look at what you already have and add a must have accessory to refresh and update – try a fabulous flower corsage or a statement satin bow, so feminine, so chic and so now! Look through your wardrobe for sleek fitted silhouettes, blouson dropped waist styles or full skirt shapes and 50s prom style dresses, lovely for the younger ones amongst us and all perfect for the party season and special events. If you do have to buy this season, think ahead and save money - the latest looks are more ladylike, longer skirts which rest on, or below the knee or even full length for formal evening dresses will take you into next season. Choose styles that are classic and adaptable, for example, a longer length dress from this season that could be shortened if trends turn short again.
Buying good quality pieces of jewellery made from precious metals, pearls and gemstones, like our own Calypso range will be an investment. Remember, “buy cheap and you buy twice” or three or more times even – buying cheap really can be a false economy!
